inconvient adapter, February 5, 2009 By This review is from: HP KS474AA 90W AC / Auto / Air Combo Smart Pin Adapter (Personal Computers) The good: this product does work, has a button to prevent charging battery if you want. comes with an adapter to expand compatibility with other HP laptops. Seperate, detachable power cables (air/auto vs 120v AC).
The bad: First, this adapter is not very travel friendly. This adapter is HUGE compared to many of the regular OEM power adapter. check the size before you buy. The wire that goes out of the adapter to the laptop is very stiff, which may be a hassle for most. The default setting when you plug any of the power plugs (air/ac/auto)in is set to "not charge" your laptop, meaning if you unplug the adapter from the ac/auto/air source and replug it in, it will not charge your laptop until you press the button, which can easily result in a empty laptop battery if you keep moving around with the charger and forget to press the button on top. lastly, this adapter's plug for the laptop is the kind with a small pin (think antenna cable for televisions)but it includes an adapter to... The charger is larger than one would expect and very heavy, but that's because it has built in surge protection (something no traveler should be without). The cord is still, but that means it won't break easily. And the fact that it doesn't charge by default is really annoying, but it doesn't make the thing unusable. My real problem with it is that it has two parts that can easily become lost and make the whole unit useless.
The first part is the adapter that makes it fit those laptops with smaller charging ports (I haven't lost this yet, but I'm sure I will eventually, and I checked and HP won't sell a replacement for this $2 adapter so once you loose it you'd better eBay the thing to someone who has a different model laptop).
The one I did loose is the car/plane cord. Without that, this is a very large and very expensive desk charger. In fact, right now I'm using it at work for just that purpose. HP will not... Read more

It also has the feature to only provide power to the laptop and NOT charge, so you don't ruin your battery by having the laptop plugged in all of the time.
This charger is larger & heavier than your average HP charger. It also doesn't have the nice cable reel around that Dell chargers have. (no HP chargers have that feature).
This product gets 4 stars instead of 5 because of weight and size, plus lack of a place to reel the cord when not in use.
